New details have been released about the case in which a 74-year-old man allegedly shot a woman inside a dental practice in Georgia and then turned the gun on himself during a traffic stop, according to a story published on December 2 in the Athens Banner-Herald.
The alleged shooter, Carl Clark, of Athens, GA, and the 47-year-old victim remain hospitalized. He is in stable condition, but the condition of the woman, whom authorities have yet to identify, is unknown. Police said Clark and the woman were in a relationship and have children together, according to the story.
The victim worked at the dental practice, according to a story published on December 1 in Classic City News.
At about 6:30 a.m. on December 1, Clark allegedly shot the woman multiple times while inside McRae Family Dental in Athens, GA. The shooting occurred before the office was open. It is unclear why Clark and the woman were at the office when the business had not yet opened. Additionally, police have not provided additional information about a possible motive.
After the shooting, Clark reportedly fled the scene but was stopped by police for a traffic stop. During the stop in Jackson, GA, Clark allegedly shot himself. Clark faces charges of aggravated assault, aggravated battery, and attempted murder.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is investigating the shooting that occurred during the police traffic stop. The Butts County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia requested that the bureau investigate the shooting, according to a GBI press release dated December 1.
A criminal complaint is merely an allegation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
