Dentist charged with distributing drugs

A dentist in South Carolina was arrested for allegedly ordering prescription drugs for his personal use in violation of drug distribution laws, according to multiple news stories published on January 20.

Dr. Robert Thaden Kroepel, 59, was charged with seven counts of violating the drug distribution law. After posting a $20,000 security bond, Kroepel was released from custody.

In June 2025, Kroepel allegedly ordered quantities of antianxiety medications alprazolam and lorazepam, both controlled substances, through fraud, deception, or forgery. Furthermore, Kroepel used his U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration registration to have the prescriptions delivered to the practice where he worked, Sand Oak Dental in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Authorities claimed that Kroepel used the medications for his own use and did not document ordering the drugs, according to the stories.

Kroepel no longer works at Sand Oak Dental. As of this reporting, Kroepel operates NY Dental South in Murrells Inlet, SC.

A criminal complaint is merely an allegation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
