Dr. Akintunde Bowden, a dental director at Milwaukee Health Services, was pronounced dead at an apartment complex in Brown Deer, WI, at about 11 p.m. on April 19. Property management officials sent a letter to tenants stating that a 27-year-old woman allegedly shot the 41-year-old one time after he confronted her about noise, according to the story.

The woman, who has not yet been identified, is being held in a county jail pending formal criminal charges.

The alleged shooter reportedly fired at Bowden after opening her apartment door. The woman claims that Bowden aggressively kicked and banged on her door, so she allegedly shot him out of fear of being assaulted, according to the story.

The apartment complex manager said that Bowden and the woman were long-term tenants, and there was no history of disputes, according to the story.

On April 21, representatives from Milwaukee Health Services released a statement stating Bowden had been fiercely committed to serving underserved communities and eliminating health disparities since he began working there in 2014. Also, Bowden, a graduate of the University of Illinois College of Dentistry, was remembered by colleagues as having a “compassionate spirit” and “visionary leadership.” He was named the nonprofit’s dental director in 2024, according to the stories.
