A dental assistant in Canada was arrested at an airport in Taiwan for allegedly smuggling more than $1.5 million worth of marijuana in her checked suitcase, according to multiple recently published news reports.

The 30-year-old woman, who works as a dental assistant in Toronto but was not identified, reportedly concealed more than 32 kg of marijuana in the checked suitcase, which was discovered at the Taoyuan International Airport in August, according to news reports published on October 30.

Authorities seized the drugs immediately after purportedly discovering them upon conducting an x-ray inspection of her luggage. The woman allegedly confessed that a drug trafficking group lured her into smuggling the drugs into Taiwan to escape her financial situation. She reportedly agreed to pretend to visit Taiwan for tourism so she could attempt to bring the drugs onto the island, according to reports.

The woman faces a minimum prison term of 10 years and $460,000 in fines, according to news reports.

A criminal complaint is merely an allegation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
