UCSF dental researchers receive Alzheimer's grant

A team of interdisciplinary researchers from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), including two from the School of Dentistry, has received a three-year, $1.3 million grant to study the cell biology of Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's Disease Pathogenesis, according to UCSF. The researchers include Diane Barber, PhD, and Torsten Wittmann, PhD, from the UCSF School of Dentistry Department of Cell and Tissue Biology.

The team is exploring the innovative idea that the lower intracelluar pH (more acidic) that occurs with neurodegeneration enables the pathologies associated with Alzheimer's disease, according to Dr. Barber.

"This is really exciting work because it is, in essence, collaborative and interdisciplinary, incorporating investigators from dentistry, medicine, and pharmacy," Dr. Barber stated in a press release.

The grant comes from the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation.
