A new certificate program offered by the University of Georgia (UGA) is offering upper-level predental students an opportunity to explore their artistic side while refining their fine motor skills before applying to dental school.
The Manual Dexterity Through Art Certification program is a collaboration between UGA's Pre-Professional Advising Office and the Lamar Dodd School of Art. The first class, comprising 14 students, filled quickly, according to UGA Today.
Under the leadership of Leah Mazza, an instructor in jewelry and metalwork, and two Master of Fine Arts candidates, students practice jewelrymaking, metalwork, ceramics, printmaking, and book arts. Funding for the program was provided by a dentist. The purpose of the program is to improve students' fine motor skills and manual dexterity -- essential skills for dental students -- as they prepare to apply to dental school, the article stated.
An exhibition of the students' work will be held Friday, April 25, at the Lamar Dodd School of Art Glass Gallery, from 5 to 7 p.m.
