A bill in the Maine Legislature would issue $7 million in bonds to upgrade community oral health clinics. The bill allocates $5 million to a dental school for the purpose of creating a clinic to cater to underserved patients.
The dental school would have to show it could match the funds.
The other $2 million would go to an existing healthcare center to upgrade its capacity to teach dental students.
The bill is now before the joint Committee on Health and Human Services and the Committees on Appropriations and Financial Affairs. It would require two-thirds approval of both houses of the Legislature, after which it would be submitted to voters as a referendum on the November ballot.
