Week in Review: Midwinter Meeting; Dental Excellence Awards; 5 issues to watch in 2016

Dear DrBicuspid Member,

Greetings from Chicago, where the Midwinter Meeting is in full force. Many had difficulties getting to Chicago because of a poorly timed winter storm, but at least on Thursday the weather cooperated, sessions were full, and traffic seemed good on the exhibit floor.

I want to again congratulate the winners of our 2015 Dental Excellence Awards. The winners were feted at an event Thursday evening at McCormick Place. See our slideshow of the award recipients here.

In a report released in late January, the Pew Charitable Trusts listed five issues in dental healthcare to watch in 2016. Jane Koppelman, Pew's research director for children's dental policy, spoke with me about these five issues and how they will affect your practice today and into the future. Read more here.

If there's one thing Dr. Desirée Walker likes to do, it's break down boundaries. She's a two-time competitor on NBC's "American Ninja Warrior," owner of a start-up dental practice, and one of the engaging speakers at our upcoming 2016 Women in Dentistry conference. Read Theresa Pablos' fascinating interview here.

A new study has linked how long patients take bisphosphonate medication and the success of nonsurgical endodontic therapy. Researchers found patients who used zoledronate for less than one year had better outcomes than those who took the drug for longer. Read Assistant Editor Theresa Pablos' story here.

Our coverage from Chicago continues into next week.
