A former dental officer manager in Ohio entered a guilty plea on August 7 for not paying more than $750,000 in employment taxes and not filing employment tax returns, according to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) Office of Public Affairs.
If a U.S. district court judge accepts the plea from Eric Moesle, who worked as an office manager at Elemental Dental in Pataskala, OH, from 2014 through 2020, a date for sentencing will be set. If the plea is accepted, Moesle faces a maximum sentence of up to five years in prison, supervised release, and penalties, according to a press release dated August 7 from the DOJ.
At Elemental Dental, Moesle, of Pickerington, OH, was responsible for the practice's payroll, bookkeeping, and tax return preparation. During his employment, Elemental Dental withheld Social Security, Medicare, and income taxes from its employees' wages, which were reflected on their pay stubs and IRS W-2 forms, according to the release.
However, the practice reportedly did not pay the money that was withheld to the IRS or file employment tax returns while Moesle was working there. Also, the practice failed to pay the employer's share of those taxes.
When interviewed by IRS representatives in 2022, Moesle allegedly falsely claimed that he was unaware that the taxes hadn't been paid or that appropriate tax returns and forms were not filed. Furthermore, Moesle purportedly told the representatives that any failures or omissions were not intentional, according to the release. In total, Moesle's criminal activity resulted in a $760,255 loss in taxes to the IRS.
