New product: Amazon debuts medical language processing service

Amazon has launched Amazon Comprehend Medical, a machine-learning service that can identify patient information from medical text, such as notes, transcripts, radiology reports, and more.

The new service uses machine learning to output relevant patient data from various sources. It can recognize medical conditions, anatomic terms, medications, medical test details, treatments, and procedures, according to Amazon.

Comprehend Medical can help practitioners, insurers, researchers, and clinical trial investigators to improve clinical decision support and clinical trials management, while better addressing data privacy and protected health information (PHI) requirements, according to the company.

The service is already available and in use by a cancer research center in Seattle. The service is covered by Amazon's HIPAA eligibility and can be integrated with other health applications, services, and systems.
