The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has granted $58.4 million to the Louisiana State University (LSU) School of Dentistry for repairs related to Hurricane Katrina damage.
Hurricane Katrina flooded the LSU School of Dentistry's facilities in 2005, and the faculty practice is currently operating with only five chairs, according to an article on Nola.com. The project will build an elevated clinical and research annex and add 12 more faculty chairs.
"The LSU School of Dentistry has been among the most prestigious institutions in the region for decades," said Rep. Cedric Richmond (D-LA) in a press release. Richmond and Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) helped to get the funding approved.
"This funding from the Department of Homeland Security will allow LSU to not only restore their facilities from damage incurred before the storm, but also modernize the program to ensure that it remains one of the premiere professional schools in the nation," he said.
