Maine summer camp gives students dental skills

The University of New England (UNE) is hosting a Dental Careers Exploration Camp for high school students this month.

Students from Maine and New Hampshire who attend the camp will learn about various dental techniques in a clinical setting on patient simulators, including drilling and filling teeth, and will have the opportunity to job shadow at dental offices, according to a press release.

Some 41% of Maine's dentists are 55 years or older, and the ADA forecasts that within five years more dentists will be retiring from the workforce than graduating from school.

UNE's College of Dental Medicine is scheduled to open this fall. The dental camp will be held June 24-26 on the Portland campus. The camp is sponsored by Time Warner Cable, TD Bank, and the Maine AHEC Network.
