Donald Joondeph, D.D.S., M.S., has been elected as the next chairman of the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). Dr. Joondeph has served as CODA's commissioner from the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) since 2007.
He is the first commissioner representing orthodontics to be elected chairman under CODA's current structure. Dr. Joondeph's one-year term as chairman begins following the October 12, 2010, conclusion of the ADA's annual meeting.
Established in 1975, CODA accredits dental and dental-related education programs conducted at the postsecondary level and is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
"CODA protects the quality of patient care by ensuring the quality of dental education," Dr. Joondeph stated in a press release. "Our mission is quality assurance in all aspects of dental education in the U.S."
In addition to his work on CODA, Dr. Joondeph is the chairman of the AAO Task Force on Recruitment and Retention of Faculty. The task force is developing sustainable solutions to the educational crisis that affects orthodontics and dentistry as a whole.
Dr. Joondeph is a professor emeritus of orthodontics at the University of Washington and was chair of the department from 1975 to 1984. He is a past president of several organizations, including the AAO, the American Board of Orthodontics, and the Washington State Society of Orthodontists. Dr. Joondeph also has a private orthodontic practice in Bellevue, WA.
