The University of California, San Francisco received the most National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding for dental research in 2008, the school announced.
Last year was the 17th year that the UCSF dental school led the race for government funding, according to the university. The school received $18.99 million and was followed by the dental schools at the Universities of Pennsylvania ($11.5 million), Florida ($10.8 million), Michigan at Ann Arbor ($10.6 million), and Washington ($10.1 million).
The competition for research dollars is increasingly stiff. Only 9.6% of research proposals received NIH funding on their first submission last year due to limited funds, a rate that has dropped steadily from 23.1% a decade ago, the university noted, citing an NIH document.
Johns Hopkins University brought in the largest total funding for medical research from the NIH, at $575.9 million, followed by UCSF with $444.3 million.
