A: There are many different ways to communicate within the office. Some are more effective then others. Of course the simplest way is for staff to find the dentist to talk, such as when a hygienist informs the dentist he or she is needed for an exam. This is effective but labor-intensive.
The oldest technology-based method was the hardwired light systems, such as Comlite. They can still be hardwired, although you can also just plug the control box into an outlet.
A more modern method is instant messaging. Many products are on the market, such as Venga or the free Mercury Messenger. These programs allow messaging from computer to computer via the office intranet. It is also possible to use free Internet instant messaging clients, such as AOL's AIM, Microsoft's Messenger, or Google Talk. The drawback of these programs is that they are location-dependent, so the doctor and staff must be near a computer.

I have found the most effective intraoffice communication method to be family service radios. These are essentially walkie-talkies with a small earpiece and a microphone. You have probably seen sales people wearing them in stores. Using the radios allows location-independent access to all members of the staff. Everyone with a radio can hear your requests, allowing any staff member or doctor to respond.
Ultimately, choosing the best communication system depends on the needs of your facility and practice.
