Texas offers to repay student loans

Texas will repay up to $140,000 in student loans for dentists willing to accept Medicaid patients in a new program described by the Houston Chronicle.

The state began taking applications this month, and it will select the first recipients in June, according to the newspaper, which noted that 80 dentists and physicians applied in the first two weeks.

The paper reported that dental students graduated with an average of $145,000 in student loans in 2006, according to the American Dental Education Association, and that medical students graduated with $139,517 in loans in 2007, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges.

The state created the program after being sued for not providing children enough access to healthcare in its Medicaid program, according to the Chronicle.
