Simplifying digital dentistry: Dentsply Sirona's vision for the future

As the landscape of dentistry continues to evolve, Dentsply Sirona remains at the forefront, pioneering advancements that streamline workflows and enhance patient care. With the International Dental Show (IDS) 2025 now in the rearview mirror, the company is celebrating a significant milestone -- 40 years since the introduction of CEREC, a groundbreaking technology that revolutionized chairside digital dentistry.

While celebrating CEREC, Dentsply Sirona is also focused on other ways that technology can improve every dental practice. According to Bruce Peatey, Group Vice President of Dentsply Sirona's new Americas regional commercial organization, one of the most exciting developments in recent years has been the launch of Dentsply Sirona's Primescan 2, the first cloud-native intraoral scanning solution, introduced at DS World Las Vegas last September.

"The premise of it is it's linked to DS Core, so powered by DS Core," Peatey explained. "You don't need new hardware for it. It runs off any internet-connected device."

This transition to cloud-based computing is a game changer, Peatey believes, allowing for seamless updates and eliminating the traditional reliance on physical hardware.

"We've seen 85 updates to DS Core since its launch," he added, highlighting the rapid pace of innovation compared to previous software products that took nearly two years between updates.

The power of connected dentistry is evident in the numbers.

"Globally, we now have over 50,000 devices connected to DS Core, more than 40,000 practices and labs. Every month, more than 100,000 lab orders are being sent through the platform. DS Core serves as the foundation of connected dentistry, integrating imaging, diagnostics, treatment planning, and collaboration into seamless, cloud-powered workflows," Peatey said.

This digital ecosystem is redefining how dental professionals interact with technology, providing a centralized platform that helps simplify the traditionally complex suite of different software used in digital workflows.

Another innovation that made waves at IDS is the introduction of a dental-dedicated magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner, the Magnetom Free.Max Dental Edition1, developed in collaboration with Siemens Healthineers. While still months away from being available to dental practices in the U.S., tomorrow's dentists are already starting to get a look at the new technology.

"It's now in a couple of universities to start, just like CBCT once was," Peatey said. "As we get more familiar with the technology, it's going to be really interesting to see how it evolves over the next few years."

By integrating intraoral scans, cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images, and MRI into a unified patient communication canvas, Peatey believes that DS Core is making diagnostics more comprehensive and accessible.

Along with advancing technology, a key theme at IDS 2025 for Dentsply Sirona was simplification.

"Simplifying a complex digital world is the way we're saying it," Peatey emphasized. "The digital world is becoming extremely complex for professionals who have their hands full actually practicing their profession. There's such great benefit in digital dentistry, but now, the focus is on making it simple for our customers. Today, digital dentistry has become connected dentistry. When we created DS Core, we had this concept in mind: a cloud platform that would be the heart of connected dentistry, where everything is in one place and through which users continuously receive new functionalities but never have to worry about keeping it up to date."

By reducing the need for manual updates and eliminating cumbersome file transfers, DS Core ensures that dental professionals can focus on patient care rather than information technology management or even challenges with training new team members and onboarding.

"Staffing is at the top of the list in many countries," Peatey acknowledged. "With DS Core, reducing the number of different software applications and having a single, intuitive interface makes onboarding and training new team members much easier."

Peatey added that the ability to perform a status scan on every patient seamlessly integrates digital technology into daily workflows, making treatment planning more efficient. Looking ahead, Dentsply Sirona is committed to further innovations beyond the recent ones presented at IDS.

"We launched Primescan 2 with a 50-Mbps upload requirement, and now it's at 25 Mbps, making it more accessible in areas with limited connectivity," Peatey said, adding that this change ensures that more dental professionals can take advantage of the latest technology without infrastructure limitations.

As Dentsply Sirona continues to push the boundaries of digital dentistry, its commitment to making advanced technology more intuitive and accessible remains clear.

"Just focus on dentistry -- we'll make it simple from there," Peatey said.
