Bill-dodging hotel guest betrayed by his toothbrush

A Welsh welcher who skipped out on his hotel bill got caught when he forgot the crucial rule for travelers: Don't forget your toothbrush.

Trainee plasterer Stephen Evans, 29, checked into a 32-pound ($51 U.S.)-a-night guesthouse in the Welsh seaside resort of Llandudno -- his hometown -- in June under a false name, according to a story in the Herald Sun.

But when he ran out after two days without paying his bill, investigators noticed the toothbrush he had left behind in his room. After having it forensically tested, they discovered a DNA match in the police database.

Evans told police he needed a place to stay because his mother had kicked him out of the family home.

Evans admitted making off without paying his bill; he also pleaded guilty to stealing a cellphone from a bar.
