The ADA honored Jeremiah Lowney, DDS, with the 2011 Humanitarian Award on Monday at its annual session in Las Vegas.
Dr. Lowney is being recognized for serving the needy in Haiti for the past three decades, providing healthcare, food, shelter, and much more. 230,000 Haitians in Jérémie and more than 100 surrounding villages are served by the Haitian Health Foundation that he founded.
The foundation provides medical, dental, and eye care and employs local physicians, dentists, nurses, and other health professionals to staff the clinic. It also assists Haitians with basic life needs, such as food, shelter, sanitation, livelihood, and education.
Dr. Lowney received a plaque and a $5,000 donation for the foundation during the ADA award presentation.
The ADA also honored L. Jackson Brown, DDS, with the 2011 Distinguished Service Award for his numerous years of service to the dental community as a researcher and author.
Only members of the dental profession are eligible for the Distinguished Service Award, and each year the ADA Board of Trustees selects one recipient.
From 1996 to 2007, Dr. Brown served as the associate executive director of the ADA's Health Policy Resources Center. During his tenure with the ADA, Dr. Brown's efforts were focused on research into patterns of practice and delivery of care, as well as the study the dental workforce.
