Dental patient wins $10K for going paperless

Washington Dental Service (WDS), a member of the Delta Dental Plans Association, presented a $10,000 check to Carmelo Garriga of Bolingbrook, IL, for going paperless with her dental coverage.

The company launched its Lose the Right Paper sweepstakes last November. Every patient covered by Washington Dental Service who signed up for paperless explanation of benefits, predeterminations, payment vouchers, or quarterly newsletters was automatically entered into the sweepstakes.

The sweepstakes kicked off Washington Dental Service's campaign to eliminate paper from all of its claims transactions by 2014. People insured by WDS, employer groups, dentists, and brokers are among those who use the firm's online services. Through its paperless initiative, the company is striving to limit its environmental impact and encourage its partners to access information from its Web portal.

"Going paperless gets claims information to patients more quickly and helps protect the environment," said Kristin Merlo, vice president, sales and marketing, in a press release. "As Washington's largest dental benefits provider, eliminating paper from our transactions can make a big difference."
