Gordon Christensen's Clinicians Report (CR) newsletter gave top marks to Pentron Clinical's Breeze, Kerr's Maxcem Elite, and Ivoclar Vivadent's SpeedCEM in an evaluation of 12 self-adhesive resin cements.
The self-adhesives are easy to use and minimize postoperative sensitivity, the newsletter said, but they are not as strong as either total etch or self-etch primer. They can be used on posts, crowns, bridges, inlays, and onlays where the preparations "have good retentive features," according to CR, but not for veneers or adhesive bridges.
In a CR lab test, the self-adhesive resin cements had only about one-third the bond strength of Ivoclar's Multilink Automix, a self-etch primer, and a little more than half the strength of Bisco's Duo-Link, a total-etch.
