Prison dentist sues state to get job back

A California state prison dentist has filed a lawsuit against the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) in an attempt to be reinstated to the job he held for 16 years, according to a story in the Californian.

Robert Jones, D.D.S., has been stuck working in the mailroom at Salinas Valley State Prison (SCSP) since he was accused of failing to provide adequate care to inmates, the story reported.

The CDCR suspended Dr. Jones in August after its Professional Practices Executive Committee found that he failed to review or update health histories for seven inmates who were his patients, failed to adequately use X-rays for two inmates, failed to complete documentation for six inmates, and made an "inappropriate" extraction of a tooth, according to the Californian.

According to Dr. Jones' lawsuit, the CDCR has not initiated a local dental peer review of Dr. Jones at SVSP even though a local dental peer review committee exists.
