Week in Review: Lip augmentation and patient communication? Also, resin cement studies and SDF

Dear DrBicuspid Member,

Patient communication has been a theme this week on DrBicuspid.com, as we've featured columns by Drs. Sheri Doniger, Alvin Danenberg, and Lisa Knowles on different aspects of the issue.

As Dr. Doniger notes in her column, patients may not understand that seemingly unrelated situations, such as lip augmentation, may impact their oral healthcare. You can read her column here. Likewise, Dr. Danenberg learned that sometimes a simple question during conversations with patients about their health can offer important insight. You can read his column here. Dr. Knowles has observed and thought about the role clear communication plays in a dental practice, and she offers four reasons why better patient communication is good for your practice. You can read her column here.

Another topic covered in depth this week has been the role of resin cements in different procedures. As Features Editor Donna Domino reports, a new study concluded that the final color of restorations depends on a combination of the underlying tooth structure and resin cement layer. Read more about that study here. Also researchers from Switzerland set out to discover the best combination of resin-ceramic CAD/CAM materials and if it is better to use self-etch or etch-and-rinse cements. Our report on their study is here.

We also reported on a new study on the benefits of treatment with silver diamine fluoride (SDF) in primary teeth, and we continue to follow the developments in Georgia, where Suzanne Newkirk, RDH, notes that legislation allowing hygienists to deliver preventive oral healthcare services will be proposed again in that state.
