The cause of death of a 17-year-old girl who died at a hospital days after becoming unresponsive when she was given anesthesia for a dental extraction at an Illinois practice has been determined, according to multiple news stories.

Sophia Farmer -- who died at a hospital on July 24 after undergoing treatment at Northern Lakes Oral Surgery and Dental Implant Center in Grayslake, IL, four days earlier -- died because of complications while under sedation, according to the news stories.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled that the contributing factors of Farmer’s death were an ARID1B gene mutation and multiple neurological abnormalities. ARID1B gene mutation is a rare genetic disorder associated with conditions characterized by developmental delay and intellectual disability.

At about 8:30 a.m. on July 21, emergency responders arrived at the dental practice for a call of an unresponsive patient. Farmer, of Spring Grove, IL, was in critical condition when she was taken to a local hospital and then transferred to another hospital. She died on the evening of July 24, according to the stories.

Farmer, survived by her parents, a sister, a brother, and other relatives, loved boating, camping, and dogs. Also, the teen was active in her church youth group and enjoyed singing on the worship team, according to her obituary.
