Dr. Califf nominated to head FDA, HHS

President Barack Obama announced today that he will nominate Robert Califf, MD, to head the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Dr. Califf is currently the FDA deputy commissioner for medical products and tobacco, a position he has held since March 2015, according to a White House announcement. He has served in various capacities at Duke University School of Medicine and the Duke University Medical Center between 1982 and 2015. At Duke University School of Medicine, he served as the vice chancellor, a professor of medicine, and the director of the Duke Translational Medicine Institute, which he founded in 2006.
