FDA takes another look at acetaminophen

The U.S. FDA is considering new guidance on products containing acetaminophen due to the danger of potential liver damage, according to an ADA News article.

A recently convened FDA advisory panel has recommended changes in packaging and dosage for these products. The FDA generally follows an advisory committee's recommendations but is not required to.

According to the ADA Council on Scientific Affairs, appropriate dosages and dose intervals makes acetaminophen relatively safe for patients without a history of liver disease or individuals who are not at risk for hepatic complications, given the short-term manner in which it is generally utilized in relieving dental pain, the article noted.
