Global ban on mercury amalgam adopted

The United Nations Minamata Convention of Mercury has banned the manufacture and trade of mercury-added dental amalgam globally, effective January 1, 2035, according to a European Commission news article.

The decision was announced at the sixth Conference of the Parties to this Convention, which took place November 3-7 in Geneva.

The decision was met with applause and standing ovations, according to a news article from the Minamata Convention on Mercury. The move is a step toward protecting the environment and eliminating the harmful effects of mercury poisoning.

The European Union has outlawed the use and trade of mercury-added dental amalgam since January 1, 2025.
