CU Dental puts students' minds at ease with VR

The University of Colorado School (CU) of Dental Medicine has introduced a virtual reality (VR) program to help reduce stress and support the mental health of dental students and faculty.

Initially, VR headsets were purchased for training, but studies have shown that VR mindfulness programs help reduce anxiety and promote relaxation, according to the university.

The team created a guided mindfulness experience using the VR headsets. Participants signed up via email and then completed a short presession survey to rate their levels of calm, comfort, tension, and presence. They then selected a virtual environment and enjoyed a 10-minute guided breathing meditation. Afterward, participants completed a post-session survey with the same questions.

Since its launch in early 2024, the pilot program has shown positive results. The research team plans to continue the program and believes mindfulness could play a larger role in dental education and practice in the future.
