University of Alberta to downsize dental school staff

Budget issues are prompting the University of Alberta medical and dentistry school to implement some faculty cutbacks.

About $10 million in faculty cuts will be made from the school's current operating budget of $500 million, stemming from a $42 million shortfall in provincial funding, according to a story in the Edmonton Journal.

The school graduates more than 160 doctors, dentists, and pathologists among approximately 2,500 students. More than 4,500 people, including more than 640 full-time professors and 1,200 support staff, work at the school.

Professors from the dental school bring in millions of dollars in research money to the region annually, including $131.5 million last year in grants, the Journal noted.

About 2,300 clinical trials are ongoing in Alberta through the combined effort of the faculty and Alberta Health Services.
