Univ. of Central Florida shelves dental school plans

The University of Central Florida (UCF) has withdrawn its request to open a dental school in the new Medical City development in Lake Nona, according to a story in the Orlando Sentinel.

The proposal had come under fire from industry leaders and members of the Florida Board of Governors, which oversees the state's 11 public universities.

UCF announced its decision a day before a key committee was scheduled to vote on its proposal to open Florida's fourth dental school, according to the Sentinel.

Both UCF and the Florida A&M University (FAMU) had gone before the board with proposals to build new dental schools; last month, FAMU also withdrew its proposal.

The University of Florida also has submitted a proposal to expand its existing dental school.
