Dental patient robot gets more realistic

Researchers from Showa University in Japan have designed a realistic robot dental patient that can perform functions such as choking and shaking its head, according to a story in the Akihabara News and other news reports.

The Showa Hanako 2, fabricated by robot maker Tmsuk, is designed for to help dental students learn to do various procedures in a more realistic way. It is more functional and easier to use than its predecessor, Showa Hanako 1, according to the story.

It can blink, roll its eyes, sneeze, shake its head, cough, move its tongue, and get tired of keeping its mouth open. It also has the ability to make conversation using speech recognition technology, and can store and analyze each student's performance and give feedback.

Showa Hanako 2 will be sold by Yoshida Dental Manufacturing.
