ADA selects next Hillenbrand fellow

The ADA has selected Elizabeth Shapiro, DDS, of Waterman, IL, as the 2011-12 ADA Hillenbrand fellow, according to an ADA News report.

Awarded every other year, the fellowship program mentors dentists with strong leadership potential who wish to transition into a nonclinical dental career in a health-related organization.

The program will run from September 2011 through August 2012. During this time, Dr. Shapiro will learn about the ADA's agencies and departments, other oral health organizations, and federal and state government agencies. She will also have the opportunity to take academic courses through the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

Dr. Shapiro attended dental school at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and she also has a law degree from Northern Illinois University. She has served on a number of ADA and Illinois State Dental Society councils and committees. She also lobbies on a volunteer basis for the state dental political action committee.

As part of the fellowship, Dr. Shapiro will undertake a project that is of interest to her and also benefits the ADA.
