UCF announces plans to open dental school

Florida may soon be getting a new dental school: The University of Central Florida (UCF) announced plans on Thursday to open a College of Dental Medicine in 2014, according to a news story in the Orlando Sentinel.

Florida already has three accredited dental schools, but UCF officials said there's a need for a school in Central Florida.

The UCF dental school will graduate approximately 100 dentists a year. The project will start with a $10 million donation from an anonymous donor, the university will borrow about $40 million, and the school will not seek state money, reported the Sentinel.

"The College of Dental Medicine will mean opportunities for our local students to obtain a dental education that they must now leave our area to achieve," John Hitt, UCF president, said in the story. "The college will create opportunities to help more people in need of dental care who cannot afford it. And it will provide Central Florida with new jobs and an economic boost in challenging times."
