The latest issue of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine's publication Dialogue honors the diplomates of 2010 for the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine (ABDSM).
The diplomates went through an eight-month process of exams, applications, letters of recommendation, case studies, and prerequisite positions. Out of hundreds of applicants, only 11 were awarded the title of diplomates in the industry of dental sleep medicine.
Diplomate status recognizes dentists licensed by law who have successfully completed the board-certification requirements established by the ABDSM.
"Becoming a diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine ... [leads] to an increase in sleep physician referrals, as being credentialed gives more credibility from both a physician and patient standpoint," said Manoj Maggan, DDS, regarding his recent diplomate status. "I wanted the credentials because we realized DSM would play a very important role in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea, and continuous positive airway pressure therapy cannot be tolerated by everyone."
