$50K grant supports Ariz. school-based dental clinic

The Human Services Campus has received a $50,000 grant from CVS Caremark Charitable Trust to be used for free dental services for children in the Murphy Elementary School District, the first onsite community-based, comprehensive preventative and restorative school-based dental clinic in Arizona.

The Central Arizona Services (CASS) Dental Clinic for Children in the Murphy Elementary School District opened on June 1, 2010, to provide full dental care including x-rays, oral examinations, teeth cleaning, fluoride treatments, and fillings for each of the district's 2,200 students.

The clinic was created and is managed by Kris Volcheck, DDS, MBA, who developed a nationally recognized, community-based model for dental care for the homeless at Central Arizona Services on the Human Services Campus. The number of children served at the Murphy clinic in 2011 is projected to be "700% higher than the number of children we were able to treat at the Human Services Campus in 2009," Dr. Volcheck said.

"Our goal is to see each child in the district several times during the year to ensure they are on a regular schedule of dental care," Dr. Volcheck said. "Incorporating and promoting good oral health at an early age is critical to a child's overall well-being and sets the stage for a lifetime of proper care and regular checkups. This is particularly important for children of low-income families who may not otherwise have access to these services and the education and awareness it brings."
