Grant to enhance ADEA enrichment program

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has granted funding to the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) to support need-based travel expenses for participants in the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP), which is jointly sponsored by the Association of American Medical Colleges and the ADEA.

Each summer, approximately 960 college freshmen and sophomores from disadvantaged backgrounds attend SMDEP at 12 sites across the U.S. for an "enrichment experience" designed to improve their chances of admittance to medical or dental school, ADEA said. The program is intended to increase the number of students from disadvantaged backgrounds enrolled in medical and dental school.

With this new funding, travel scholarships will be available to SMDEP scholars at all 12 sites during the summer 2011 sessions. It is anticipated that a minimum of 70 scholars will receive travel scholarship funds of up to $500 each.
