NM university expands dental program

A ceremony was held December 7 to celebrate the opening of the new dental facilities that have been added to the Health Science Center on the Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU) Roswell campus.

The $5.8 million project was funded through a general obligation bond issue passed by voters in 2006.

The 16,720-sq-ft addition houses a new dental clinic for all the dental education programs, including 11 dental operatories, offices, an auditorium, and classrooms. Dental education programs offered in the facility include a certificate in dental assisting and an associate degree in dental hygiene. Funding obtained through a statewide planning effort was used to equip UNM's Novitski Hall with state-of-the-art ITV equipment that is used to broadcast dental hygiene classes to rural dental hygiene programs, including ENMU-Roswell.

In addition, dentists from UNM Dental Services and dental residents from the UNM Dental Residency Program currently spend one week monthly in Roswell to assist with outpatient dental services for children and for adults with special needs.

A graduate of the UNM Dental Residency Program, Michelle Luikens, DMD, is the dental director for the ENMU-Roswell programs.
