The University of Iowa College of Dentistry has received $100,000 from a Greensboro, NC, couple and plans to construct a new facility named in their honor as part of the school's renovation project.
The university will construct the Olmsted Family Endodontic Faculty Suite, named in recognition of John Olmsted, D.D.S., a graduate of the college, and his wife, Frankie Olmsted, a former dental lab technician at the school.
Costs for the multiyear renovation project currently are estimated at $60 million, with at least $10 million of that to come from private support. The renovations will transform the 35-year-old Dental Science Building by adding space, updating and expanding clinical areas, increasing classroom and student space, and upgrading dental research facilities, the university said. The college's general and specialty dental care clinics receive about 125,000 patient visits each year.
"Frankie and I are honored to make this gift in support of such an important project," Dr. Olmsted said. "We know our investment will help the college not only retain leading researchers and scholars, but also recruit new research faculty by offering adequate and appropriately equipped space."
Dr. Olmsted continues to be a leader in dentistry; he is a past chairperson of the ADA annual meeting and past president of the American Association of Endodontists.
