Maine panel votes to fund new dental school

The Health and Human Services Committee of the Maine Legislature voted unanimously March 17 to issue a $7 million bond as funding for a new dental school at the University of New England, according to the Bangor Daily News.

The bill still has hurdles to jump before money can flow: It must pass a vote of the full Legislature and then another by Maine voters in November, the paper reported.

The University of New England has been raising funds for a dental program for four years, with plans envisioning a class of 40 students per year starting in 2012, the newspaper reported. It said that $2 million from the total would go to rural dental clinics that could use the money to increase the number of patients they treat and also host fourth-year students fulfilling their clinical requirements.
