Athanasios (Thanos) Zavras, D.M.D., D.M.Sc., has been appointed associate professor of dental medicine and director of the newly established division of oral epidemiology and biostatistics at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine.
Dr. Zavras is an internationally recognized researcher in oral and molecular epidemiology, the university noted in an announcement. His strong scholarship and wide ranging interests ensure that he will advance the College of Dental Medicine's integration across Columbia University Medical Center and the promotion of oral health as an essential component of overall health, the school noted.
Dr. Zavras' research involves the use of quantitative sciences to solve important public health problems, particularly environmental-behavioral-genetic interactions in cancer risk assessment and individual responses to pharmacotherapies.
Prior to joining Columbia University, Dr. Zavras led the oral epidemiology and dental public health programs at the Harvard School of Public Health and the School of Dental Medicine, and established major research initiatives in the field of oral cancer and bisphosphonate-associated osteonecrosis.
