U.K. dentists' annual income averages $149,497

Self-employed, primary care dentists in England and Wales earn an average of 89,062 pounds ($149,497 U.S.) a year, the National Health Service (NHS) announced.

The agency said that 382 of the two countries' 19,000 dentists earn more than 300,000 pounds ($502,975).

The average dentist in these countries grossed 193,436 pounds ($324,290) and had expenses of 104,373 pounds ($174,989).

The NHS also released its first survey of dentists' salaries in Northern Ireland, where dentists earned an average of 89,756 pounds ($150,502).

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average net income for a general dentist in the U.S. is $154,270. But the numbers may not be directly comparable, since the bureau's figures include dentists working on salary while the NHS figures apparently exclude them.

Most U.K. dentists are self-employed, but many also work under contract for the NHS.
