Wal-Mart is getting into the electronic health records (EHRs) business, according to a story in the New York Times.
The company plans to team its Sam's Club division with Dell for computers and eClinicalWorks for software, the Times reports.
The Sam's Club offering, to be made available this spring, will cost less than $25,000 for the first physician in a practice, and about $10,000 for each additional doctor, according to the Times. After installation and training, annual costs for maintenance and support will be $4,000 to $6,500 a year, the story noted.
The company's test bed for the new EHR technology has been its own healthcare clinics, the Times stated. Started in September 2006, 30 such clinics are now in Wal-Mart stores in eight states.
No word yet on whether they plan to market the same technology to dentists.
