IMEP offers free emergency preparedness classes

The Institute of Medical Emergency Preparedness (IMEP) is offering its medical emergency membership and related continuing education courses for free to the dental community throughout 2009, the organization announced.

"The recent $8.5 million settlement in the untimely death of Georgette Watson in Chicago, IL, illustrates the importance of being prepared for a medical emergency so one can respond quickly and effectively in a crisis situation," said John Roberson, D.D.S., IMEP co-founder, in a press release. "Being prepared for a medical emergency does not guarantee a dentist won't have a bad outcome, but it gives a patient the best chance of survival and the dentist the best chance of keeping his/her license. We believe IMEP's medical emergency membership would assist dentists in defense should litigation arise following a bad outcome."

The medical emergency membership from the institute is designed to allow dentists and their staff to practice, prepare, and train all year long on medical emergencies, without ever having to leave the office, via online continuing education medical emergency courses. IMEP offers a structured, organized plan that will assist dentists in planning and initiating monthly medical emergency mock drills, as well as providing medical emergency specialty tests. In addition, IMEP's plan meets Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements for an emergency action plan, according to the organization.
