Drug charges against dentist on Haiti mission dismissed

All charges have been dropped in the case of a Tennessee dentist on a relief mission to Haiti who was accused of trying to illegally transport prescription drugs, according to a story in the Leaf Chronicle.

On April 18, Karyl Jean Beauchamp, D.D.S., was stopped at the Nashville airport by airport police after they found five bottles of narcotic painkillers in her bag that were prescribed to someone else. She was arrested for possession with intent to deliver controlled substances.

Her attorney, David Raybin of Nashville, claimed Dr. Beauchamp did not commit a crime because she was a doctor who could have prescribed the same medications. But the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency says it is illegal to import or export controlled substances unless you are registered as an importer or exporter.

But last week the district attorney's office asked Raybin to verify that Dr. Beauchamp was a dentist and that she was going to use the drugs as part of the medical care she expected to give while in Haiti, according to the Leaf Chronicle.

He did so, and a Davidson County judge signed an order dismissing the case on April 30.
