Volunteers in Medicine has received $7,300 from the Boston Scientific Foundation to fund and promote its recently created dental program, the Owen County (Indiana) Clean Teeth Initiative.
The grant will enable Volunteers in Medicine to educate local children about the benefits of proper dental hygiene and inform their parents about the medical services that Volunteers in Medicine can provide, the organization said in a press release.
Volunteers in Medicine will work with public schools and churches to help identify the children who are in the most need of dental services and education. Children under age 12 on reduced lunch plans who show indications of poverty will be targeted.
Each eligible participant will be provided a dental hygiene kit that will include dental products, educational material, and a pamphlet that details the services that Volunteers in Medicine can provide. The clinic will institute an advertising campaign promoting the benefits of proper dental hygiene as well.
"This is an exciting opportunity for us to reach out to residents of Owen County with the help of an Owen County corporate supporter," said Volunteers in Medicine Executive Director Elizabeth Sturgeon. "This is another example of the power of a community coming together to care for its own citizens."
