Delta Dental of Michigan cuts workforce

Delta Dental of Michigan let go 30 workers and plans to cut another 30 by August after General Motors and Chrysler eliminated retiree dental coverage, according to a news story in the Lansing State Journal.

Together these cuts represent 10% of the company's workforce.

The two auto companies are reorganizing in bankruptcy, and revised labor contracts do not include dental insurance coverage for retirees, the paper reported.

"There are several hundred thousand retirees, plus spouses and eligible dependents," said Delta Dental spokesman Ari Adler in the article. "It's a significant development that made it necessary to reduce costs. Some of that will be done through elimination of jobs, and we'll be reviewing other things."
