Newly appointed U.K. Secretary of State for Health Andy Burnham has urged health service managers to press ahead with fluoridating water nationwide, according to a news story in the Times.
"I feel we've been too timid at times on the public health agenda," Burnham said in the article. "So let's press ahead with water fluoridation, given the clear evidence that it can improve children's dental health."
Burnham has also stepped down as honorary vice president of the British Fluoridation Society to avoid potential conflict-of-interest charges in the fluoridation debate, the Times reported.
The Department of Health said that the central government would not impose fluoridation, and all decisions should be taken locally after consultations, the story concluded.
