Joining the ongoing battle against carries is a brand new gadget from IDMoS -- the CarieScan, which uses electrical impedance to detect carious lesions.

A sensor on the tip of the CarieScan measures the tooth's response to a small alternating current. The results are analyzed by a built-in computer and show up immediately on the unit's pyramid-shaped color LED display, with green indicating sound teeth, yellow indicating initial, and red indicating established caries. A separate monochrome LCD display provides the dentist with a numerical readout on the carious condition of the tooth, as well as icons indicating the CarieScan's status (battery charge, wireless connectivity, and so on).

"It [CarieScan] facilitates earlier and more accurate detection of tooth decay than currently possible with any other commercially available system and aims to exploit a global shift towards preventive management of dental decay," the company stated in a press release.

The CarieScan costs approximately $3,000.
