Pulpdent ends PMGDM-based adhesives shortage

Pulpdent has developed a catalyst that successfully synthesizes PMGDM, a material essential for formulating certain dental adhesives.

The chemical reaction that synthesizes the PMGDM molecule requires a special catalyst, and that catalyst suddenly became unavailable last summer, the company explained in a press release. This resulted in a worldwide stoppage of the production of the PMGDM used to manufacture these dental adhesives.

After months of research, Pulpdent was able to synthesize the catalyst, thus ending the shortage and is now the only company in the world currently synthesizing PMGDM suitable for manufacturing dental adhesives, according to the company.

Since 1994, Pulpdent has been manufacturing adhesives under license from patents developed by Rafael Bowen and assigned to the American Dental Association Health Foundation. These adhesives contain PMGDM with the magnesium salt of NTG-GMA.

Pulpdent has returned to producing fourth- and fifth-generation adhesives that are as good as or better than the adhesives it has manufactured in the past, with independent testing yielding "excellent results" and shear bond strength greater than 29 MPa, the company said.
