A new self-adjusting file (SAF) by ReDent Nova worked well in a study published in the April 2010 Journal of Endodontics (Vol. 36:4, pp. 697-702).
The SAF is able to adjust itself to the formation of the root canal, according to ReDent Nova.
In the study, a ReDent Nova researcher and colleagues from the Goldschleger School of Dental Medicine, the University of Zurich, and the University of Goettingen performed root canal preparations in 20 canals with a size 20 K-file followed by the SAF in a vibrating motion for 4 minutes.
They alternated sodium hypochlorite (3%) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) (17%) as continuous irrigants.
Then they split the roots longitudinally and examined them with scanning electron microscopy. They found that the canal walls were free of debris. The coronal third of the canal appeared completely clear of smear layer. The middle third appeared 80% smear clear, and the apical third appeared 65% smear clear.
The researchers did not provide any comparison with conventional techniques.
